Chesterfield Royal Hospital NHS Foundation Trust provides a full range of acute services (including 24-hour accident and emergency care) to the whole population and specialist services for children.
As North Derbyshire’s only acute district general hospital, with 24 hour Emergency Department services, they are responsible for providing care and treatment to more than 400,000 people.
The Occupational Therapy department at Chesterfield Royal Hospital has approximately 45 members of staff over a number of specialities including Admissions avoidance, Medicine, Surgery, Orthopaedics, Neurology and Critical Care.
Your leadership placement will be based in one of these specialties, working long side another student or students, where there will be opportunity to do one day per week of clinical work to enhance skills in this area and the rest of the week working on a leadership project outlined by your educator. The project will be something beneficial to the service which should be able to be carried on after the placement ends.
The leadership project may involve investigating current service provision and gaps in service, increasing your knowledge with a certain group of service-users, benchmarking with other trusts, researching underpinning policy and procedure and evidence-based practice. You will then be required to develop a proposal, implement an intervention, evaluate this and produce a report or presentation to hand-over the new intervention to the rest of the team going foreword.
In this placement you will have the opportunity to develop your communication and leadership skills, team working and autonomy, research and management skills.
Placement objective will be to undertake and complete a project to improve service delivery. This may involve problem identification, research, benchmarking, underpinning with theory, implementation and evaluation. Followed by completing a proposal or presentation of how this will be carried foreword after the placement ends.
